A significant incident occurred recently in the Bailey Road area of Dhaka, Bangladesh. On February 29, 2024, a fire broke out in a building called Green Cozy, which had six floors. The building housed various shops and restaurants such as Kacchi Bhai Restaurant, Samsung Showroom, Gadgets & Gear, Ellyen, Khana’s, and Pizza Inn.

Although it was initially thought that the fire originated from Kacchi Bhai Restaurant on the second floor, it was later discovered to have started in a small shop on the ground floor. Unfortunately, many people were harmed not by burns, but by inhaling smoke, as they struggled to escape the building due to limited exits.
The cause of death was believed to be carbon monoxide poisoning from the toxic smoke. Firefighters faced challenges in controlling the fire due to the absence of proper safety measures in the building. As a result, more than 100 people lost their lives, with many others sustaining injuries.
Despite warnings from the fire department, no action was taken by the building’s owners to address safety concerns. This incident underscores the importance of ensuring building safety to prevent such tragedies in the future.
